Family, friends and honor may mean less to one person but another may find more value in them also. For Bony it was friends yet he lost one that meant a lot to him, and begins to find a way to fill in the loss by carrying around a monkey head he found . “ Chango”. In “ Train Time” Major Miles meets Eneas and begins to take a big interest in the Honor and respect he has for his grandparents. For Jackson Jackson family was what he cared for but the person he cared for the most was his grandmother who had passed away but he finds something that brings him close to her again.
“ I want to keep him” ( Oscar Casares pg. 42) Bony began to become attached to a monkey head that was left in his yard, he would take it everywhere with him, and even though his parents told him to get rid of it but he refused to. “ All you want to do is drink beer with your new best friend, your compadre, instead of going out to make a living.” ( Oscar Casares pg. 42) When his father says this to him to me it makes me see how much Bony really misses his friend Mando who was killed in an accident, and how much need he truly has to find a new friend to fill in the hole tha Mando left when he died. “ I didn’t want somebody to steal him.” Bony cares a lot about the monkey head enough to the fact that he tries to keep it as safe as he can even though his parents want him to get rid of it.
“ That was the beginning of Majors interest in Eneas. He had decided that day he would help the boy in any way possible because he was a boy of quality.” ( pg 24 Mano) Major Miles was amazed at the fact that Eneas had so much willingness to help out his grandparents who were very weak, with that little boys strength he kept his grandparents living and happy. “ You would be shirking your duty if you failed to recognize and to help a boy of his sort. Eneas ha very distinct characteristic about him he was determined to give up whatever was best for him to help out his grandparents even his very own education. Major Miles was so interested and was very determind to find any ways possible to give him what he needed and even guaranteed care for his grandparents, yet thats not what Eneas wanted he was there for his grandparents always that was the family he had left there was no way he could leave them. “ The Major realized in a sudden sharp remorse that he had waited too long. The vital moment had come, and he had paused, looked for words, and lost it.” ( pg 38 Mano) Major Miles was left speechless as soon as he had looked at Eneas there was so much he wanted to do for him yet Eneas did not want the same things. Eneas had an enormous amount of honor towards his grandparents and that one thing that Major Miles will always remember him for.
“ Because they don’t want to be perfect, because only God is perfect, Indian people sew flaws into their powwow regalia.” (pg.440 Sherman) Jackson Jackson knew his grandmothers regalia so well that he knew there would be a yellow bead, yet he could be wrong he was sure to prove that it was his grandmothers. “ I know it’s crazy, but I wondered if I could bring my grandmother back to life if I bought back her regalia.” ( pg.442 Sherman) Jackson cared so much about his grandmother that he wondered if winning back her regalia would bring her back to life he even knew he sounded crazy but his grandmother meant a lot to him. “ We should call the police,” he said “ I dont want to do that,” I said. “ It’s a quest now. I need to win it back by myself.” ( pg 444 Sherman) It was his way of proving he cared for her that he didn’t want to do it the easy way he wanted to do it the harder way. “ Ive been killing myself ever since she died.” ( pg. 451 Sherman) Ever since his grandmother died his life just went down hill his grandmother was everything to him and it broke his heart when she died. “ I want to be a hero, you know? I want to win it back like a knight.” “ Thats romantic crap.” It might be. But I care about it. Its been a long time since I really cared about something.” ( pg. 453 Sherman) His grandmothers regalia meant so much to him that he wanted to win it back in a hero sort of way which shows he loved her very much. Jackson had quit caring about everything for a while but seeing his grandmothers regalia gave him something to care about and he was determined to get it back. “ I took my grandmothers regalia and walked outside. I knew that solitary yellow bead was part of me.” ( pg. 457 Sherman) He had finally felt like he was with his grandmother, a feeling of comfort overwhelmed him.
For Bony he just needed something to help feel the hole of his dead friend, because that was what he cared about the most. Major Miles was amazed by how much honor a little boy could have for his grandparents, and Jackson Jackson just needed something that made him feel closer to his family
